If you’ve read my blog on 6 things customers love when shopping online, you know that having a fast site is super important. Nobody has time to wait around for your pages to load. We live in this amazing world of ‘right here, right now’ and nothing is exempt from that expectation. So I’m here to tell you 3 steps you can take right now to make your website run faster and make your customers love you even more.
1. Compress your images. I have a whole post dedicated just to this, because it’s so important, and super easy to do on your own. When your file sizes are too large, your website can just struggle to load. I know I’ve personally been guilty of leaving a website that was taking too long to load.
2. Reduce the number of apps you’re using. Shopify offers so many fancy apps and add-ons, but your website works kind of like your brain. When you’re trying to do a million things at the same time, you reach mental fatigue before you know it and nothing ends up getting done. Make sure you’re only running apps that are absolutely necessary to your business.
3. Minify HTML and CSS. If you’re not in the programming world, that might sound like a made up word, but it’s totally real. To minify just means to remove the unnecessary parts of the code. Basically the back end of your website is still reading every key-stroke in the coding, even the things that are doing nothing on the front end (the part your customers see). You don’t have to know anything about coding to do this, there are tons of websites that will help you DIY! But if you’re uncomfortable on the back end of your site you can hire a pro.
Your customers will love how quick and easy their experience on your website is, and that’ll keep them coming back for more (and telling their friends)!
